The 30th street corridor is home to a vibrant, artistic, and community minded part of San Diego’s population. So much of what we see in our neighborhoods resonates with the kind of world God is building. Creativity abounds, diversity of every kind is celebrated, sustainability is seen as a virtue not a restriction, hospitality and neighborly ways of living together in the city are on the rise. As followers of Jesus Christ we see these things and celebrate. These are all signs of life, signs that God is at work in our neighborhood.
Genesis is a community of faith seeking to discover and live out in our time and place the ancient and beautiful way of life Jesus taught and lived.
We desire to be a home for spiritual sojourners, full-fledged Jesus freaks, skeptics, and second-chance Christians who need a hospitable community to embrace them anew. We long to share the love of Jesus with our world and our neighborhood primarily through acts of service, love, and hospitality.
Genesis began gathering in a living room in March of 2012, but the dream of a church in the neighborhoods surrounding San Diego’s Balboa Park was born years before.
God gave us a dream of a church that would ooze hospitality, creativity, and love.
Our desire was to cultivate a community that would be a spiritual home for people who didn’t feel at home in church.
We desperately needed to be part of a community centered on Jesus above all else. Jesus above politics. Jesus above culture-wars. Jesus above all. We are truly captivated by few things, but the one that captures our imagination more than anyone or anything else is Jesus.
We believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
We believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.
Chances are you’ll find Wil in a coffee shop in North Park writing a sermon. He has a passion for opening scripture up to be heard in new and creative ways. Wil and his wife, Amy, love taking their boys Corbyn and Hudson exploring.
Zach is a social pterodactyl. He loves getting to know people and fostering friendships. Zach gives leadership to small groups in Genesis we call “Apprentice Groups” where people get together to practice and unpack what it means to be Jesus imitators.
Charlie is an pastor and and artist at heart. Merging the worlds of light and color with the gospel is what he’s passionate about. Charlie enjoys going to the drive-in movie theater with his wife, Kara, and daughter Zoe.
Danae is passionate about the church living out the Mission of God to bless all the nations. She is a flurry of activity and a giant heart all rolled into one. Danae leads Genesis in making connections in the neighborhood that lead to restoration and redemption.
Andy is a vagabond at heart, coming to us most recently from an Alaskan fishery. When he isn’t putting together sets for Sunday, he is working on his own music, “beaching it up,” and riding his bike around San Diego. Much of the rest of his time is spent as a barista at Subterranean Coffee where he makes amazing mochas and lattes.
We have an awesome Kid’s Church team ready to serve your family and love your kids. All our Kid’s Church volunteers have gone through background checks and training before they stepped into this ministry.
